Amish Onion Fritters (Crispy & Flavorful)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the batter. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Stir until evenly mixed. Gradually add the milk to the dry ingredients, whisking until the batter is smooth. Once the batter is smooth, gently fold in the finely chopped onions until they are evenly coated with the batter.
  2. Heat the oil. In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a small spoonful of batter into the hot oil. If it sizzles and begins to brown, the oil is at the right temperature for frying.
  3. Fry the fritters. Using a spoon, scoop small portions of the onion batter and carefully drop them into the hot oil. Gently flatten each fritter slightly with the back of the spoon. Fry each side for about 2–3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate to remove any excess oil.
  4. Serve. Serve the Amish Onion Fritters warm, optionally with sour cream, ranch, or a dip of your choice. They’re crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and packed with savory onion flavor!

Serving Notes

These fritters are delicious on their own or served alongside a hearty meal. You can also serve them as an appetizer or party snack with a variety of dipping sauces. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days and can be reheated in the oven or microwave, though they are best served fresh to maintain their crispy texture.
