Instructions
1. Prepare for Baking
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease two standard 6-cavity donut pans thoroughly with butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
2. Make the Crumble Topping
- In a small bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
- Add the cold, cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work it in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Set aside in the fridge while you make the batter to keep the crumble cold and clumpy.
3. Combine the Dry Ingredients
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
4. Combine the Wet Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg until uniform.
- Whisk in the buttermilk, cooled melted butter, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
5. Make the Batter
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold together with a spatula just until combined. Do not overmix — the batter should be slightly lumpy.
- Gently fold in the diced apple until evenly distributed.
6. Fill the Donut Pans
