Cherry Turnovers with Sweet Vanilla Glaze

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven. Set your oven to 400°F (200°C). This high temperature ensures the puff pastry will puff up beautifully and crisp up perfectly.
  2. Prepare the puff pastry. Thaw the puff pastry sheets according to package instructions and roll them out on a lightly floured surface. Roll the pastry just slightly to smooth any creases, but don’t make it too thin.
  3. Cut the pastry. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 squares. You should have 8 squares total—each the perfect size for a turnover.
  4. Add the cherry filling. Place 1–2 tablespoons of cherry pie filling in the center of each square. Be careful not to overfill them to prevent spillage while baking.
  5. Form the turnovers. Fold each pastry square over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges to seal, making sure the filling stays inside. Use a fork to crimp the edges and give the turnovers that classic look.
  6. Prepare the egg wash. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of milk. Brush the egg wash evenly over the tops of the turnovers to give them a golden, glossy finish when baked.
  7. Bake the turnovers. Place the turnovers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes or until they are golden brown and puffed. The pastry should be crisp and slightly flaky on the edges.
  8. Make the glaze. While the turnovers are baking, mix the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 2–3 tablespoons of milk in a bowl to make the glaze. Adjust the milk for your desired consistency—smooth and pourable but not too thin.
  9. Drizzle the glaze. Once the turnovers are done and have cooled slightly, drizzle the glaze over them. The glaze will set quickly, adding a sweet finishing touch to each turnover.

Serving Notes

These turnovers are best served warm, right after the glaze has been drizzled. They’re perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a sweet afternoon snack. Pair them with a hot cup of coffee or tea for a delightful treat. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for a few days, but they’re best enjoyed fresh!
