Chocolate Cake Slice and Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup hot milk (for hot chocolate)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (for hot chocolate)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for hot chocolate)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (for hot chocolate)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
  • Chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan, or line it with parchment paper. This ensures the cake will come out of the pan easily after baking and prevent any sticking.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. This step is essential to ensure the dry ingredients are well mixed, which helps prevent clumps of cocoa powder or baking soda in your cake batter.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth. The wet ingredients should be well combined before adding to the dry ingredients. The oil helps keep the cake moist, while the vanilla adds a subtle aromatic sweetness.
  4. Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix at this stage—stir just until the batter is smooth to avoid a dense cake.
  5. Once the batter is well combined, gradually add the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but this is intentional—it helps the cake remain moist and soft. Stir gently until everything is mixed. The batter should be smooth and runny at this point.
  6. Pour the cake batter into the prepared cake pan. Use a spatula to spread the batter evenly. Tap the pan on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles that might have formed during mixing.
