Classic Butter Cookies (Melt-in-Your-Mouth Holiday Favorite)

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. Cream the butter & sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat softened butter and powdered sugar together until light and creamy (about 2 minutes).
  3. Add yolk & vanilla: Mix in the egg yolk and vanilla extract. Continue beating until fully incorporated and smooth.
  4. Add dry ingredients: Sift in the flour and salt. Mix on low speed or with a spatula until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Shape the cookies:
    • For piped cookies: Transfer dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip and pipe onto baking sheets in rosettes or “S” shapes.
    • For slice-and-bake: Roll dough into a log, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30 minutes before slicing into ¼-inch rounds.
  6. Bake: Bake for 10–12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
