  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water

Chocolate Frosting (Optional)

  • 1 cup (225 g) softened unsalted butter
  • 3 ½ cups (440 g) powdered sugar
  • ½ cup (50 g) cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼–1/3 cup (60–80 ml) heavy cream or milk

This classic mixture of cocoa, sugar, and boiling water yields an incredibly tender crumb. The frosting adds a sweet, creamy contrast that complements the rich chocolate layers.
