Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast (Classic Comfort Food)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ingredients. Finely chop the dried beef into small pieces. Toast the bread until golden brown, and set it aside. The bread should be sturdy enough to hold the creamy sauce without becoming soggy.
  2. Make the roux. In a saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously until the mixture turns golden brown, about 2 minutes. This step creates the base for the creamy sauce and helps thicken the mixture as it cooks.
  3. Create the cream sauce. Gradually pour in the warm whole milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook and stir the mixture for about 5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. Keep the heat at medium-low to prevent the sauce from burning.
  4. Add the flavors. Stir in the finely chopped dried beef into the sauce. Add a small pinch of cayenne pepper to give the sauce a mild heat and stir well to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, if needed.
  5. Serve. Spoon the creamed chipped beef over the toasted bread slices, ensuring the toast is generously covered with the creamy beef mixture. Serve hot and enjoy!
