Instructions
1. Melt the Cheese
- In a medium saucepan, add the white American cheese and ½ cup of whole milk. Set over low heat.
- Stir frequently using a silicone spatula or wooden spoon. As the cheese begins to melt, continue stirring to prevent sticking or scorching.
2. Add Spices & Flavor
- Once the cheese has mostly melted, stir in the onion powder, cumin, garlic powder, and chili powder if using. These seasonings give the queso its signature Tex-Mex aroma and taste.
- If using green chiles, stir them in now. They add depth without overpowering the mild, creamy base.
3. Adjust Consistency
- If the dip is too thick, add more milk a tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired texture. It should be pourable but not runny.
- Taste and adjust salt if needed. Some cheeses are saltier than others, so season to your preference.
