Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and sausage together, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Once fully browned, drain excess grease.
- Add the diced onion and garlic; cook for 2โ3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Stir in the marinara or pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), and salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes to thicken and deepen the flavor.
Step 2: Prep the Baking Dish
- Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Lightly grease a deep 9ร13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or olive oil.
- Optional: Spread a layer of cooked pasta (penne or rotini) on the bottom of the dish for a heartier casserole.
