Finding Our Place
In the private dining room, Tyler ate quietly for a while. “Mom,” he finally asked, “why did Aunt Claire call me an extra?”
“Because some people confuse worth with money and status,” I said. “But she was wrong. You’re important because of who you are — smart, kind, and good.”
He smiled. “This is the best lobster I’ve ever had.”
“Eat as much as you want,” I told him.
Later, Ashley came in. “They left,” she said. “They paid the bill and asked me to tell you they’re sorry.”
Tyler looked up. “Will they hate you now?”
“Maybe for a while,” I said. “But remember, sweetheart — you are never an extra. You are the main character in your own story. And anyone who treats you otherwise doesn’t deserve to be in it. Even family. Especially family.”
