Tacos and Indian Fry Bread – Don’t Lose This Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Oil for frying

Directions

  1. Start by combining the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk the dry ingredients together to ensure they’re evenly distributed. This step helps to create a light, airy texture in your fry bread.
  2. Next, stir in the cold water and vegetable oil. Mix everything together until the dough comes together into a ball. You may need to use your hands to knead it slightly in the bowl to make sure all the flour is incorporated and the dough is smooth. The dough should be soft but not too sticky. If it feels too sticky, you can sprinkle in a little more flour as you knead it.
  3. Once the dough is ready, transfer it to a floured surface. Pinch off ten pieces of dough, each about the size of a golf ball. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten each ball into a round disk using your hands or a rolling pin. Aim for about 1/4 inch thickness for each round, making sure they are relatively uniform in size for even cooking.
  4. Make a small hole in the center of each flattened dough round. This will help the fry bread cook evenly and gives it that signature shape. You can also gently stretch the edges of the dough if you want to make the hole larger or change the shape slightly.
