Traditional Indian Fry Bread 🍞 – Crispy, Soft & Versatile

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Mix the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Gradually add warm water, stirring as you go, until a soft dough forms. The dough should not be too sticky—add a little more flour if necessary.

2️⃣ Knead the Dough 🍞

  1. Lightly knead the dough for 3–5 minutes on a floured surface until smooth.
  2. Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes to allow it to rise slightly.

3️⃣ Divide & Flatten

  1. Divide the dough into 6–8 equal pieces, depending on your desired size.
  2. Roll or flatten each piece into a disk about ¼ inch thick.

4️⃣ Heat the Oil 🛢️

  1. Heat 1–2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy pan over medium heat until hot (around 350°F / 175°C).
  2. Test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough in. It should immediately bubble and float to the surface.

5️⃣ Fry the Bread 🍞🔥

  1. Carefully place the dough pieces into the hot oil, frying them 1–2 minutes per side, or until they turn golden brown.
  2. Once golden and crispy, remove the fry bread and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

6️⃣ Serve Warm 🍽️

  • Serve your fry bread warm, topped with savory taco meat or beans, or with sweet toppings like honey, powdered sugar, or jam.
  • It’s also perfect as a base for dishes like fry bread tacos or as a side for chili.
