Apple Fritter Waffle Donuts

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup finely chopped apples (peeled or unpeeled, your choice)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for glazing)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for glazing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly grease it with cooking spray or brush it with a small amount of melted butter to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. This will form the dry base for your waffle batter, giving it that warm, spiced flavor.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until well combined. Stir in the melted butter, making sure it’s incorporated smoothly into the wet ingredients.
  4. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the waffles tough. The batter should be thick and smooth.
  5. Fold in the finely chopped apples, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter. The apples will soften slightly as the waffles cook, adding a juicy, sweet element to each bite.
  6. Once your waffle iron is ready, scoop about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of batter (depending on the size of your waffle iron) onto the center of the waffle iron. Close the lid and cook the waffle for about 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. The waffles should be crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, with the apples perfectly cooked within.
  7. Carefully remove the waffle from the waffle iron and place it on a plate to cool slightly while you prepare the glaze.
