Ingredients
- 1 (16 oz) can refrigerated biscuits (for a flaky, buttery base)
- 1 lb breakfast sausage (pork or turkey, your preference for flavor)
- 3 cups frozen shredded hashbrowns (for a crispy, hearty layer)
- 1 cup milk (for the gravy and to create a creamy texture)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for thickening the gravy)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for flavoring the gravy)
- Salt and pepper (to taste, for seasoning the gravy)
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional, for a cheesy finish)
Instructions
- Prepare the biscuits: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking dish. Open the can of refrigerated biscuits and cut each biscuit into quarters. Arrange the biscuit pieces evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Cook the sausage: In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon until fully browned and crumbled. This should take about 7-8 minutes. Once the sausage is cooked, drain any excess grease, if needed.
- Make the gravy: Add the flour to the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to allow the flour to absorb the fat and thicken. Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook the gravy over medium heat, continuing to stir, until it thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Once the gravy has thickened, remove it from heat.
- Assemble the casserole: Pour the frozen shredded hashbrowns evenly over the biscuit layer in the baking dish. Then, pour the sausage gravy mixture evenly over the hashbrowns. Use a spoon to spread everything into an even layer. If desired, sprinkle the shredded cheese on top for a cheesy finish.
- Bake the casserole: Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the casserole is hot and bubbly. If you added cheese, it should be melted and slightly browned on top.
- Serve: Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Cut into squares and serve warm. This casserole pairs wonderfully with a side of fresh fruit or a light salad for a complete meal!
