Cheesy Broccoli Rice Casserole Bake

Instructions

    1. Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Allowing the oven to fully reach this temperature before baking helps the casserole heat evenly from the start, preventing any cool spots that might cause uneven melting or irregular texture. While the oven warms, take a moment to position a rack in the centre to promote balanced circulation of heat.

    2. Step 2: Prepare the Casserole Mixture

In a large mixing bowl—large enough to stir comfortably without spilling—combine the cooked white rice and steamed broccoli florets. The rice should be fully cooked but still fluffy and separate, not mushy, so it absorbs the creamy mixture without losing structure. The broccoli should be steamed just until bright green and tender, with a slight bite.

Add 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese, reserving the remainder for the topping. If you choose to include the shredded cooked chicken, gently fold it in so the pieces remain distinct rather than shredded into the mixture. Pour in the condensed cream of chicken soup and milk, which will form the creamy base that binds everything together.

Season the mixture with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir slowly and thoroughly, reaching down to the bottom of the bowl to incorporate the ingredients evenly. The mixture should look thick, well-blended, and uniformly coated, with no pockets of dry rice or condensed soup.

    3. Step 3: Transfer to a Baking Dish

Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish using a thin, even layer of oil or cooking spray. This helps prevent sticking and makes serving easier later. Transfer the prepared mixture into the dish, spreading it smoothly into all corners. Leveling the surface ensures the casserole bakes consistently and the cheese topping melts evenly.

Step 4: Add the Cheese Topping
