Cheesy Cabbage Casserole

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish (such as 8×8 or 9×9 inches) with oil or nonstick spray. This prevents sticking and ensures easy cleanup after baking.
  2. Cook the ground beef mixture:
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fully browned and the onion is tender. Break up the beef into crumbles as it cooks for even texture.
Add the minced garlic during the last minute of cooking and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Season with salt, pepper, and any optional spices you prefer. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  3. Add tomatoes and cabbage:
Stir in the canned diced tomatoes (with juice) and tomato sauce. Add the chopped cabbage and stir well to combine. Cook the mixture for 5–7 minutes, allowing the cabbage to soften slightly. This helps it bake more evenly in the oven. The mixture should be warm and slightly saucy but not watery.
  4. Assemble the casserole:
Transfer the cooked mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread it out evenly with a spoon or spatula. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top to create a gooey, golden topping as it bakes.
  5. Bake the casserole:
