1️⃣ Make the Cake Layers
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, oil, vanilla, and sugar until smooth and combined.
- Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
- Slowly stir in the hot water or coffee — the batter will be thin. This is normal and helps the cake stay moist.
- Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for 28–32 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely before frosting.
