1. Make the Cake:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two or three 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy—about 3–4 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in the orange zest and vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Alternately add the dry ingredients with the orange juice and buttermilk into the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix gently just until combined.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
