Ground Beef and Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. If preparing the mashed potatoes from scratch, start by placing the peeled, evenly cubed potatoes in a pot of cold, salted water. Bringing them up to temperature this way helps them cook evenly. Boil gently for about 15 minutes, or until a fork easily pierces the pieces without resistance.
  2. Drain thoroughly to remove excess water, as this will help the potatoes mash into a creamier consistency. Add the butter and milk or heavy cream while the potatoes are still hot, then mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper, adjusting to taste. Keep warm while you prepare the beef and gravy.

2. Cook the Ground Beef

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat. Break it up with a spatula as it cooks so the pieces become evenly browned. When no pink remains, drain off any excess fat to keep the gravy from becoming greasy.

3. Sauté the Aromatics

  1. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked beef. Continue cooking for 2–3 minutes, or until the onions turn translucent and the mixture becomes fragrant. This step deepens the overall flavor of the gravy.

    4. Make the Gravy
