Ingredients
- 2 cups milk chocolate chips (for the chocolate coating)
- 1 cup marshmallow fluff (or marshmallow crème, for a smooth and fluffy filling)
- ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk (for a creamy, sweet caramel-like base)
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce (for the gooey caramel layer)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (to enhance the flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare the caramel layer: In a medium saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce over low heat. Stir occasionally to ensure the mixture doesn’t burn. Continue heating until the mixture is smooth and combined, creating a rich caramel flavor. Once it’s ready, set it aside to cool slightly.
- Prepare the marshmallow layer: In a separate mixing bowl, combine the marshmallow fluff (or marshmallow crème) with the vanilla extract. Stir until smooth and well combined. The marshmallow fluff will create the soft, airy layer in the homemade Milky Way bars that gives them that signature chewy texture.
- Assemble the layers: In a greased or parchment-lined 9×9-inch square baking pan, first spread the caramel mixture evenly across the bottom. Then, gently spread the marshmallow fluff layer over the caramel, smoothing it into an even layer. The contrast of the creamy caramel and fluffy marshmallow creates the signature filling of a Milky Way bar.
- Prepare the chocolate coating: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the milk chocolate chips in 20-30 second intervals, stirring between each, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate, as it can burn easily. Once melted, pour the chocolate over the caramel and marshmallow layers, spreading it out evenly with a spatula. Ensure that the top is fully covered, creating a smooth, glossy chocolate coating.
- Chill and set: Place the baking pan in the refrigerator for at least 2-3 hours, or until the chocolate has fully set and hardened. This will allow the layers to firm up and make the bars easier to cut into squares.
- Serve and enjoy: Once the bars have set, remove the pan from the refrigerator and carefully cut them into squares or rectangles, just like the classic Milky Way bars. These homemade treats are best enjoyed chilled, as the caramel and marshmallow layers will stay soft and gooey, while the chocolate coating will remain firm
