- Start by making the meat sauce. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat a small amount of oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Brown the meat for about 6-8 minutes, until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
- Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the meat mixture and sauté for about 3-4 minutes, until the onion becomes soft and translucent. This step helps build the flavor base of the sauce.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine (if using), and bring the mixture to a simmer. Add the sugar, dried basil, and dried oregano. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together and the sauce to thicken slightly.
