Soft and Fluffy Cinnamon-Walnut Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough. In a small bowl, mix the sugar, yeast, and lukewarm milk. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the yeast activates, about 5-10 minutes. The mixture should become bubbly and slightly frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture with the egg, vegetable oil, flour, and salt. Stir until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. Once kneaded, place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the filling. While the dough is rising, melt the butter in a small bowl. In another bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon to taste. Chop the walnuts (if using) into small pieces for added texture.
  4. Roll out the dough. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Brush the melted butter evenly over the entire surface of the dough. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the buttered dough and add the chopped walnuts, distributing them evenly.
  5. Shape the rolls. Starting from one edge, carefully roll the dough up into a tight log, pinching the seam to seal it. Slice the rolled dough into 1-1.5 inch sections and place the rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between them.
  6. Let the rolls rise.
