👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Cake 🍰
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13×18 inch sheet pan (or a similar-sized large rimmed baking pan) with butter or non-stick spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the water and cocoa powder, stirring until smooth. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then remove from heat.
- Pour the hot chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well until combined.
- Add the eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract, stirring until the batter is smooth. Be careful not to overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and spread it evenly.
- Bake for 20–22 minutes, or until the cake springs back when lightly touched in the center. A toothpick inserted should come out clean.
2️⃣ Make the Warm Frosting 🍫
- With about 5 minutes left in the cake baking time, start the frosting: In a saucepan, heat the butter, milk, and cocoa powder over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
- If using, stir in the chopped pecans, then set the frosting aside.
3️⃣ Frost the Cake 🍰
- Once the cake is done and still warm, pour the warm frosting over the cake. Spread it evenly with a spatula, making sure to cover the entire surface.
- Let the frosting set for a few minutes, then allow the cake to cool completely. The frosting will become fudge-like and glossy as it cools.
4️⃣ Serve 🍽️
- Cut into squares and enjoy the ultra-moist, rich chocolate cake.
- This cake is perfect for parties, potlucks, or family dinners — and it’s always a crowd favorite!
