Texas Sheet Cake 🍫 – Rich, Moist & Irresistible

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Cake 🍰

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13×18 inch sheet pan (or a similar-sized large rimmed baking pan) with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the water and cocoa powder, stirring until smooth. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then remove from heat.
  4. Pour the hot chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well until combined.
  5. Add the eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract, stirring until the batter is smooth. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and spread it evenly.
  7. Bake for 20–22 minutes, or until the cake springs back when lightly touched in the center. A toothpick inserted should come out clean.

2️⃣ Make the Warm Frosting 🍫

  1. With about 5 minutes left in the cake baking time, start the frosting: In a saucepan, heat the butter, milk, and cocoa powder over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
  3. If using, stir in the chopped pecans, then set the frosting aside.

3️⃣ Frost the Cake 🍰

  1. Once the cake is done and still warm, pour the warm frosting over the cake. Spread it evenly with a spatula, making sure to cover the entire surface.
  2. Let the frosting set for a few minutes, then allow the cake to cool completely. The frosting will become fudge-like and glossy as it cools.

4️⃣ Serve 🍽️

  • Cut into squares and enjoy the ultra-moist, rich chocolate cake.
  • This cake is perfect for parties, potlucks, or family dinners — and it’s always a crowd favorite!
